What is a bulging, ruptured, or herniated disc?

A bulging or prolapsed disc is one that extends beyond its normal position. A disc bulge occurs when the tough outer fibers of the spinal disc weaken and stretch allowing the “jelly-like center” of the disc to “bulge” outward. A disc bulge is generally considered the first step toward a more serious problem called a herniated disc.

A herniated disc is a disc that has a tear in the outer cover, called the annulus. A herniated disc is similar to a bulging disc except that the outer layers of the disc actually weaken to the point of tearing.

A ruptured (torn) disc is a disc with a tear in the annulus that results in the center (nucleus) leaking out. A ruptured disc is the next stage that can occur following a herniated disc. With a ruptured disc, the outer layers of the disc weaken to the point of tearing, allowing the jelly-like center (nucleus) to escape.
